The students of the Ron Clark Academy (RCA) track team can run fast, but how fast can they make sandwiches? They found out on March 2nd when they partnered with the Lovett School’s track team in a community service event to provide peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to help the Nicholas House in Atlanta. The students were broken into three teams (mixing students from each school) and given three loaves of bread, some spoons, spreading knives, and plenty of peanut butter and jelly. They were told they had to create the sandwiches, but were given no further directions. The students had to work as a team and problem solve to construct the sandwiches in a productive and efficient manner. They proved to be very effective, making over 100 PB&J sandwiches for the women and children’s home.
Lovett Coach, Charlie Finch, and Ron Clark Academy coaches Adam Dovico and Candice Jordan, have spent several weeks planning on bringing the two schools together for the event. “We all felt it was important to expose our students to the value of community service,” said Dovico. “In the process, we managed to allow our kids to build relationships with other students their age and have a fun time making the sandwiches.” The experience was certainly memorable, as students hugged and were asking when they could get back together again. The RCA Track team is in its first year, adding to the success of new athletic programs for RCA, including basketball, cheerleading, and tennis. The track team will be competing in numerous meets this spring in Atlanta.
