The Ron Clark Academy takes part in Girls Get IT

The Ron Clark Academy (RCA) has partnered with Women in Technology (WIT) in their Girls Get IT program, which collaborates with the business community to inspire female middle and high school students to become active in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

On October 11, 2010, students from RCA visited McKesson, a company that provides medicine, supplies, and information technologies to the healthcare industry.  Girls were able to get a behind the scenes look at the organization and meet key members of the company’s senior level management team.

Many of the students chosen have participated in other WIT events.  RCA has made it a mission to expose girls to other successful women in the information technology industry.  Students are selected by Junior Bernadin, Technology Manager at RCA, based on academics, interest and the technological knowledge base of the students.  Additionally, students must also serve in the sixth, seventh, or eighth grade and have proven to cultivated basic principles and understanding of technology.

“I am happy that it is sparking an interest in a young age,” said Bernadin.  “I think it’s very inspirational for me to watch them around other empowered women and to be able to expose them to powerful careers so that they know such opportunities are not out of reach."

Bernadin also values the initiative students have taken outside of the classroom as it pertains to technological problem solving.  “I appreciate how much they’re troubleshooting technical issues at home and helping their parents as well,” said Bernadin.

Historically, RCA has provided various afterschool activities exposing students and the community to technology.  RCA’s classroom offers the latest in cutting edge technology that continually expose students to the importance and use of technological advances.
