Thursday, April 21, 2011The Ron Clark Academy Model United Nations Team
The Ron Clark Academy Model United Nations team traveled to New York City for the sixth Annual UNA-USA International Middle School Model UN Conference for four days over their spring break week. The team, coached by RCA teachers Gina Coss and Adam Dovico, represented the Republic of Austria in committees such as the General Assembly, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNESCO and the International Labor Organization (ILO). Eight seventh and eighth graders worked for several months creating position papers, understanding the structure and procedures of the United Nations, and researching every aspect of Austrian politics and culture.
Over 1,400 student diplomats from around the world came together at the conference, learning how to debate, caucus, and negotiate together over the two days of the UN simulation. The RCA students represented Austria with enthusiasm as they wasted no time collaborating with other countries in order to draft and sponsor strong resolutions. In fact, in the ILO committee, of the five resolutions that were voted on, only two passed, one of which was co-sponsored by "Ambassadors" Imani Moss and Nissaba Stover. Seventh grader Aliyah Cofer was also recognized as an honorable mention recipient for Austria's position paper on Multilingual and Heritage Language Education in the UNESCO committee which included over 220 students. The team enjoyed their time in New York City outside of Model UN as well. The students ate at an exciting Japanese restaurant called Ninja, saw an off-Broadway improvisation comedy show, and were treated to a surprise "out of state" dinner in New Jersey. Congratulations to the Model UN team for an outstanding performance at the International Model UN Conference!
