The Essentials Step Team Perform at the Second Annual Atlanta Ice Cream Festival

IceCreamFestival

Remembrance continued to be the theme as the Essential Step Team made their way to Piedmont Park for the Second Annual Atlanta Ice Cream Festival on Saturday, September 10th.

Focused on building up the reputation of the Essential Step Team, the 2011-2012 team unveiled a new show as part of a family-centered event allowing local restaurants, entrepreneurs, artists and businesses to advertise goods and services.

The Essentials were invited to perform when team members Brenton and Regan Nesbitt proudly suggested the team as event planners put out the call for “the best step teams in the state of Georgia.” Although a relatively young team, who is still engaged in exhibition shows, the team aspires to compete and jumped at the chance to step with and experienced championship step teams.

The Essentials were met by RCA staff and family and were treated to a delicious lunch by the Dortch family whose Dortch's BBQ restaurant has been in business since 1963. The team savored the pulled pork and chopped chicken sandwiches graciously served by the Dortch family and then it was show time!

As the middle school step team on the program, RCA gave it their all and were open to learn from the high school team to follow. Gamma Kappa Phi, the South DeKalb high school step team, has won multiple awards in competitive stepping in Georgia and the Southeast region.  Their complex steps were delivered with high energy and enviable precision, giving the Essentials the opportunity to witness the discipline behind a championship team! The RCA Essentials cheered them on and even had an opportunity to support the team as they raised funds to travel to another competition.

Both teams demonstrated an alternative way for young people to keep active and fit.

As part of the beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Essentials continued to distribute the Cocoa for Heroes treats to first-responders after dedicating the day’s step show to those directly affected and forever changed by the events of 9/11.
