Garth Brooks Visits RCA
While in town for the NHL All-Star Weekend, country star Garth Brooks paid a visit to the Ron Clark Academy. In addition to a special tour, RCA students - 5th and 6th graders - showed Brooks how they use song and dance to learn 8th grade Algebra. As a tribute to Brooks, students closed out the visit by performing one of Brooks’ songs – We Shall Be Free - a song Brooks wrote following the 1992 race riots in Los Angeles.
Brooks is the founder of Teammates for Kids, a foundation that encourages professional players to give money to specific child/education based organizations. After hearing about the Academy from Ken Martin, the NHL’s Vice President of Community and Diversity Programming, Brooks decided to add a visit to the school to his All-Star Weekend itinerary. The Academy also has a relationship with the Atlanta Spirit, whose company-wide employee volunteer program, Team Spirit, was launched at the school this past summer.
