Comcast Cares Day

For the second year in a row, the Ron Clark Academy was one of several sites for Comcast Cares Day, a day when Comcast employee volunteers give back to the community.  While last year volunteers spent time sprucing up the school’s warehouse/gym, this year’s theme was to “Go Green,” so there was lots of productive play in the dirt.  Close to fifty or so volunteers, including Comcast employees, RCA students and parents, and other community volunteers from organizations like the United Way, gathered their gloves, shovels, hammer and nails and helped to build compost bins and a pollinator garden to add to the Academy’s campus.  The new and improved compost bins will reduce the amount of food waste the school disposes of on a daily basis.  The pollinator garden will serve to enhance the edible garden that students have been working on since last year.  While on campus, the group of volunteers also installed bigger and better recycling bins (both inside and outside) to help make the school’s current recycling program even more intentional.

City Councilman Caesar Mitchell stopped by to show his support of the project, acknowledging the importance of community service and volunteerism.  Although most of the morning was spent outside, RCA students did take a few breaks to offer tours of the school to all visiting volunteers.  And of course, to celebrate a day of hard work and productivity, everyone was Slide Certified before leaving to go home.

Thank you to Comcast for selecting RCA as one of its sites.  Thank you to those volunteers who made the day such a success.  And to the businesses/organizations that also pitched in to support this partnership project, including – Farmer D, Urban Studio, and Seeds of Nutrition, the Academy is most appreciative!
